Dental Implant vs Bridge: Which Is Right for a Missing Tooth?
If you have lost a tooth, the two most common fixed replacements are an implant and a bridge. Neither is right for everyone. The right choice depends on the teeth beside the gap, the bone, your health, and your priorities. Here is how we compare them at The Smile Makers Dental Clinic in Khar West, Mumbai.
Written by Dr. Mohit Bodhwani (Endodontist), The Smile Makers Dental Clinic, Khar West, Mumbai.
How they differ
- A dental implant is a titanium post placed in the jawbone, topped with a crown. It replaces the root as well as the visible tooth.
- A bridge replaces the tooth by attaching an artificial tooth to crowns on the neighbouring teeth, so those teeth must be shaped.
Points to consider
- Neighbouring teeth: if they are healthy and untouched, an implant avoids cutting them. If they already need crowns, a bridge can restore all three teeth together.
- Bone: an implant needs enough healthy bone. Without it, bone grafting may be needed, or a bridge may be better.
- Time: a bridge is usually completed sooner. An implant needs healing time for the bone to integrate.
- Cleaning: both need diligent hygiene. A bridge needs cleaning under the false tooth, and an implant needs cleaning around the gum line.
- Medical factors: smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and certain conditions affect implant healing.

Cost comparison
At our clinic a dental implant costs a fixed Rs 35,000 per implant, including the crown. A 3-unit bridge costs Rs 15,000 to Rs 22,500 (edited in October 2026). Any additional procedures are planned and priced separately after examination. Think about the full picture, including how each option is likely to hold up over the years, rather than price alone. Frequently asked questions
Which lasts longer, an implant or a bridge?
Both can last for many years with good care, but results vary. We do not promise a fixed lifespan.
Is an implant painful?
The procedure is done under local anaesthesia. Some soreness afterwards is expected.
Can I get an implant right after extraction?
Sometimes. It depends on infection, bone and stability, and your dentist will advise.
Do I need a root canal on neighbouring teeth for a bridge?
Not usually. Only if the tooth already needs it or the preparation is likely to affect the nerve.
