Many patients are curious about what really happens when an implant is placed. Knowing the steps takes away much of the worry. Our earlier post covers the cost and timeline of a dental implant in Mumbai. This one walks through the procedure itself, as we do it at The Smile Makers Dental Clinic in Khar West.

Written by Dr. Mohit Bodhwani (Endodontist), The Smile Makers Dental Clinic, Khar West, Mumbai.

Step 1: Assessment and planning

We examine your mouth, review your medical history and take X-rays or a 3D scan to measure the bone. The implant position is planned before surgery, and any gum disease or infection is treated first.

Step 2: Extraction, if needed

If the tooth is still present and cannot be saved, it is removed. Depending on the case, the implant may be placed at the same time or after the site heals.

Step 3: Placing the implant

Under local anaesthesia, a small opening is made in the gum and a space is prepared in the bone. The titanium implant is placed in it. The gum is closed around or over it. You should feel pressure but no pain. The visit commonly takes around an hour for a single implant.

Step 4: Healing and integration

Over the next weeks to a few months, the bone bonds with the implant. This is called osseointegration. The time depends on bone quality and the site. A temporary tooth may be provided in the meantime.

Step 5: Abutment and crown

Once the implant is stable, a connector (abutment) is attached and an impression or scan is taken. The final crown is made and fitted. Digital design helps us shape it for a natural look and a comfortable bite.

Recovery and aftercare

  • Swelling and soreness are expected for a few days.
  • Eat soft, cool food at first and avoid chewing on the site.
  • Keep the area clean as instructed and take any prescribed medicines exactly as directed.
  • Avoid smoking, which affects healing.
  • Attend your review visits.

Call us if pain increases after the first few days, the implant feels loose, or you have fever or pus.

Cost

A dental implant starts at Rs 35,000 per implant at our clinic, crown included. The final cost depends on the tooth, the bone and any extra procedures, and is confirmed after an examination. See fees and dental implants.
