Short answer: No, not always. Dr. Manoj Bodhwani (Prosthodontist and Implantologist) says a bone graft is recommended only in some cases. Whether you need one depends on your own bone and is decided after an examination.

When is a bone graft usually recommended?
- You have already lost natural bone. This is commonly seen in older patients.
- The bone density is not enough to hold an implant.
- The width of the bone is less than needed.
- There is an anatomical obstacle that can be overcome by adding bone in the right place.
When is a bone graft usually not needed?
- When an implant is placed immediately after a tooth extraction and the bone around the tooth has not been damaged.
- When you already have good bone height and good bone width, enough to hold the implant.
Does a bone graft change the timeline?
Yes. If a graft is needed, healing can add three to six months before the treatment is complete.

Book AppointmentWho decides if you need one?
Only your dentist can tell you, after examining you. It depends on each case, so please do not assume from a friend’s experience that you will or will not need a graft.
