Teeth Whitening in Mumbai: What to Expect and How Long It Lasts

Teeth stain over time from tea, coffee, tobacco, and simply from ageing. Whitening is one of the most requested cosmetic treatments, but results depend on the cause of the discolouration and the condition of your teeth. Here is a straightforward guide from The Smile Makers Dental Clinic in Khar West, Mumbai.

How teeth whitening works

Whitening uses a peroxide-based gel to break down stain molecules inside the enamel. In an in-office procedure, the gums are protected, the gel is applied to the teeth and sometimes activated with light, and the process is repeated in short cycles. A session usually takes about an hour.

Is a check-up needed first?

Yes. Whitening works on natural enamel. It does not change the colour of crowns, fillings or veneers. We check for cavities, gum problems and worn enamel first, and often advise a professional cleaning before whitening so surface stains do not affect the result.

Who may not be suitable?

  • Teeth with untreated decay or active gum disease, until they are treated.
  • Very sensitive teeth, where a gentler plan may be needed.
  • Grey or brown discolouration from an old root canal or injury, which may need a different approach such as internal bleaching or veneers.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Most dentists defer elective whitening during this time.

Sensitivity and aftercare

Some people feel temporary sensitivity or mild gum irritation after whitening. It usually settles within a day or two. For the first couple of days, limit strongly coloured foods and drinks such as tea, coffee, red wine and curry, and avoid smoking. Use a soft brush.

How long do the results last?

There is no fixed duration. It depends on your habits, diet and oral hygiene. Many patients enjoy the result for months to a couple of years, and a touch-up can be done if needed. We do not promise a specific shade, since every tooth responds differently.

Frequently asked questions

Does whitening damage enamel?

When done by a dentist on healthy teeth with the correct products, it is considered safe. Overuse of strong products without supervision can cause problems.

Are home kits as good as an in-office session?

Home kits vary a lot in strength and safety. A dentist-supervised plan is better matched to your teeth and gums. See our post on whitening safety.

Can whitening remove tartar?

No. Tartar needs professional scaling. Whitening only lightens stains within the tooth.

How soon can I eat normally?

You can eat straight away, but it is wise to avoid dark-coloured food and drinks for the first 48 hours.
