A root canal has a bad reputation, but modern treatment is a planned procedure done under local anaesthesia. At The Smile Makers Dental Clinic in Khar West, Mumbai, root canals are performed by Dr. Mohit Bodhwani (Endodontist), who has more than 16 years of experience and has completed over 25,000 root canal treatments. Here is what a typical visit looks like.

Step 1: Examination and X-ray

We start by listening to your symptoms and examining the tooth. A digital X-ray shows the shape of the roots and whether infection has reached the bone around them. This lets us plan the treatment before we begin.

Step 2: Numbing and access

The area is numbed with local anaesthesia. A small opening is made in the top of the tooth so the inside can be reached. Most patients tell us the procedure itself feels similar to having a filling done.

Step 3: Cleaning and shaping the canals

The infected or inflamed tissue inside the tooth is removed. The canals are then cleaned and shaped carefully so they can be sealed properly. This is the most important part of the treatment and the reason experience matters.

Step 4: Sealing and restoring the tooth

The cleaned canals are filled and sealed. The tooth is then restored, and in many cases a crown is advised to protect it. Read more about our root canal treatment and about crowns and bridges.

Aftercare

• Avoid chewing hard food on the treated side until the final restoration is done.
• Keep brushing and flossing as usual.
• Call us if swelling, a high bite or lasting discomfort develops.
