Does a root canal hurt?

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia before we begin, so most patients say the procedure feels similar to having a filling done. The pain people remember is usually the toothache that came before treatment, not the treatment itself.

How long does it take?

In most cases a root canal is completed in a single visit of about 30 to 45 minutes. A second visit is only needed when there is a serious infection, such as facial swelling or a sinus tract draining pus. Learn more about our root canal treatment.

What can I feel afterwards?

• Mild tenderness for a few days is common as the area settles.
• Sensitivity after the filling is normal for about 5 to 7 days.
• If you need pain relief, take a suitable painkiller as advised by your dentist.

When to call us

• Swelling in the face or gum that is growing.
• Pain that is getting worse instead of better after a few days.
• A bite that feels high or uneven.
