Teeth Scaling vs Deep Cleaning: What Is the Difference?
People often use the words scaling, cleaning and deep cleaning as if they meant the same thing. They do not. Which one you need depends on the state of your gums. Here is how they differ, from the team at The Smile Makers Dental Clinic in Khar West, Mumbai.

What is teeth scaling?
Scaling removes plaque and hardened tartar (calculus) from the tooth surfaces and just under the gum line. It is done with an ultrasonic scaler and hand instruments. Tartar cannot be removed by brushing, so it needs professional removal.
Scaling and polishing (regular cleaning)
For patients with healthy gums or mild gum inflammation, a cleaning visit consists of scaling followed by polishing to smooth the surface and remove light stains. This is often called prophylaxis. It is usually completed in one visit.

What is deep cleaning (scaling and root planing)?
If gum disease (periodontitis) has caused pockets around the teeth, cleaning above the gum line is not enough. Scaling and root planing cleans below the gum line and smooths the root surfaces so the gum can reattach and heal. It is usually done one section (quadrant) of the mouth at a time, under local anaesthesia, over more than one visit.

Book AppointmentSigns you may need more than a routine clean
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Persistent bad breath
- Gums pulling away from the teeth, or teeth that feel loose
Only an examination with gum measurements and X-rays can tell which treatment you need. Early gum inflammation, called gingivitis, often improves with a thorough clean and better home care. Read about gingivitis treatment and why gums bleed.
What does it feel like?
Routine scaling is usually comfortable. Teeth may feel sensitive for a day or two, and the gums may be slightly tender. Deep cleaning is done with numbing, so you should not feel pain during the procedure.

Book AppointmentFrequently asked questions
Does scaling loosen teeth or create gaps?
No. Tartar can hide the gaps that gum disease has already created. When it is removed, you may notice the spaces more clearly.
How often should I get my teeth scaled?
Most people do well with a check-up and cleaning every six months. Your dentist may suggest a different interval based on your gums. See how often to get teeth cleaned.
Is deep cleaning painful?
It is done under local anaesthesia. Mild soreness afterwards is common and usually settles in a few days.
Can gum disease be cured?
Gum disease can be controlled with treatment and good home care. It needs ongoing maintenance, since it can return.
